Within the Next Four Years You Will Be Paying Approximately $14,000 to Upper Providence Township and Your Plumber to Connect to a New Sewer System

By now you have received a mailing from the Sewer Authority regarding the sewer plan for Upper Providence Township.

The letter contained detail about the need for sewers. Plans for installing them included the estimated cost of $14,000 to every household required to connect to the new sewer system. The letter did not include a plan to ease the financial impact of installation on homeowners.

The Sewer Authority has arranged for financing to cover the Township’s share of the construction costs, but there is no plan to help ease the burden of individual homeowners’ costs!

Why hasn’t Council explored a Bond Offering to cover the residents’ costs, which could be paid for through a special assessment and amortized over 10, 20, or 30 years?

Why were meetings not held with the community by Council specifically about financial issues before final plans were made?

Why are we being given only 90 days to connect up to the new sewers, when residents were given up to 10 years to connect to sewers when they were installed in the lower part of the Township?

The Sewer Authority has made a Òcommunications planÓ according to its recent letter, which does not anywhere include options for easing the financial burden on homeowners! Township residents are now being presented with a fait accompli without Council ever taking up these issues or having a dialogue with us about them.

What are they thinking?

This is another example of Council inaction that will have a very unfortunate financial repercussion on Township residents.

In November, you can vote to change this history of ineffectiveness by electing a candidate to Township Council who has the background and experience to change this pattern and make a positive difference.

Tom Yeates was born and raised in Delaware County, started his career as a CPA in Media over 25 years ago, and is now an executive director at one of the Big 4 accounting firms. He retains a strong personal commitment to our community and presently serves on the Board of the Media Upper Providence Library. He will bring to Township Council the critically important financial expertise it so clearly needs. He will bring the determination to help his fellow residents at this financially difficult time.
